What is the difference between using nucleating agents in injection molding and extrusion processes

Nucleating agents can be used normally in both plastic injection molding and extrusion processes, and can play a role in refining crystals, improving product performance, and optimizing molding quality. However, there are significant differences in the forming principles, cooling rates, equipment structures, and product forms between the two production processes, resulting in significant differences in the use of nucleating agents, parameter control, and modification focus. Processing enterprises need to adjust their operating methods according to the characteristics of the process, and cannot uniformly apply the same parameters, otherwise it is easy to encounter problems such as uneven modification effects and insufficient product stability.


From the perspective of molding principles and modification requirements, there is a distinction in the purpose of using the two processes. The injection molding process belongs to the rapid prototyping process, where the molten material is rapidly cooled and shaped after entering the mold. It has a short production cycle and high molding efficiency, and is often used for complex structures and high dimensional accuracy requirements of shaped parts. The main purpose of using nucleating agents in injection molding is to shorten the crystallization cycle, improve product warpage and shrinkage, enhance dimensional stability, optimize product surface gloss and transparency, and reduce stress unevenness caused by rapid cooling.


Extrusion technology belongs to continuous forming technology, where materials are continuously melted, extruded at a constant speed, and slowly cooled. It is commonly used for long and large area products such as pipes, sheets, profiles, and films. Extrusion molding has a slow cooling rate, long natural crystallization time, and is prone to coarse crystals, high surface haze, and insufficient overall rigidity. Therefore, the extrusion process uses nucleating agents and focuses more on sustained and stable crystallization refinement effects, improving the overall uniformity of the board, enhancing overall rigidity, and avoiding material looseness and uneven light transmission caused by prolonged cooling.


The control logic for temperature and speed operation is different between the two. The temperature range of injection molding process is relatively concentrated, the screw speed is high, the melt shear force is strong, the nucleating agent dispersion speed is fast, and the activation effect is fast. During production, it is necessary to stabilize the processing temperature appropriately to avoid high temperatures causing thermal decomposition of nucleating agents. At the same time, the uniform mixing time should be controlled to ensure that the powder is fully dispersed in a short period of time. The extrusion process has a low screw speed and a longer process, which requires the nucleating agent to be continuously and stably dispersed in the long process. The temperature setting needs to be more stable to avoid excessive fluctuations in the range and prevent deviations in the performance of the front and rear products.


There are subtle differences between the two processes in terms of addition methods and mixing operations. Single batch molding of injection molded products can be achieved by uniformly mixing nucleating agents with raw materials using a pre mixing method and then operating the machine. It is suitable for intermittent production mode and can effectively improve the consistency of single batch products. Extrusion is a continuous production method that is more suitable for stable proportioning and uniform feeding. It requires a constant addition ratio of nucleating agent to avoid uneven addition at different stages, which can cause product transparency and strength fluctuations, ensuring consistent product quality throughout the entire production line.


Overall, injection molding technology focuses on rapid nucleation, stable size, and improved efficiency, and is suitable for fast-paced precision product production; The extrusion process focuses on continuous nucleation, uniform crystallization, and stable overall performance, suitable for the production of continuous sheets and profiles. In actual production, adjusting temperature, speed, mixing method, and addition rhythm based on process characteristics can leverage the advantages of nucleating agent modification and effectively improve the yield and overall quality of plastic products under different processes.
